Baltimore MD - Crystal Palace FC USA travel to Wilmington for Tuesday night’s game against a Hammerheads side that sits next-to-bottom in the league, but who have won and drawn their last two outings. That victory saw the North Carolina side score five goals against Pittsburgh, four of which were knocked in by English striker Alex Harrison - a performance that earned him USL2 Player of the Week honors.
The last time these two teams met was in early May when the Baltimore side ran out 2-0 winners at UMBC Stadium. But Crystal Palace FC USA Co-Manager Jim Cherneski was cautious not to underestimate tomorrow’s opponents: “This will be a tough match. They’ve signed a player who is a real threat in Alex Harrison and they’ve done well their last couple of games. They’re a very direct team and we’ll need to take care of their aerial attack.”
Co-Manager Pete Medd added: “We want to go down to Wilmington, continue to play well, continue to get our offensive and defensive rhythm going and come into next week’s US Open Cup match in top form. We have always had success against the Hammerheads but they’ve put us under pressure every time we've played, so we know it will be a battle. They get great crowds and it can be an intimidating place to play. We want to play well then rest up and be ready for the huge Cup match a week later.”
As for Palace’s current form, Cherneski said: “We’re coming off a good win and we need to maintain the intensity.” That victory against second-placed Cleveland on Friday broke a string of three consecutive defeats in the league, and followed a close call in the US Open Cup first round when Palace had to be at their best to overcome a tenacious L.A. Legends side. Palace’s margin of victory in each game was 2-1 with Pat Healey scoring three of the four goals, lifting him to second highest scorer on the team with four, just behind Gary Brooks who has six.
